[photo] A Colorado scene
Photo credit: William K. Dick, 1971
Date: not dated, probably 1880-1886
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 31 x 50 in (79 x 127 cm)
Inscription: l/l "FSchafer SF" initials conjoined in a monogram, in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, underlined
Verso: said to be "A Colorado Scene"
Provenance: In private collection, Northern California, by 1971.
Reproductions: Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #47 (color, 1979); William K. Dick photo #29 (color, 1971)
Description: A mountain landscape with a grey peak at the center; a waterfall falls from a distant hanging valley into a deep valley below at the right; a white bird flies in front of a rocky cliff at the center. The very steep right wall of canyon shows several dead trees. At the lower left corner is a green triangle of wildflower-dotted grass and trees, with three dead tree trunks lying in a clearing, a large white boulder, and several smaller rocks. The sky is mostly cloudy with some blue at the upper left. (From the painting, 19 July 1990.)
Note: A painting with the title Scene in Colorado was offered as lot 13 in the catalog of a July 1885 auction in Victoria, British Columbia, but there is not enough information in that catalog to either include or exclude the possibility that it is this painting.
Identification: The two photographs appear to be of the same painting. The initials "S.F." following the signature suggest that the painting was executed during the period 1880-1886, when Schafer had a studio in San Francisco.
Other title(s): Colorado mountains and waterfall (Early California and Western Art Research index)
In index(es): Title list, unidentified mountain scenes
