Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #76 (color, undated); Bonhams & Butterfields 11 June 2003 sale catalog (color).
Site: The Pacific Ocean, just south of Cypress point, near Monterey, California. The location is named "the lone cypress" on modern maps, with Midway point just beyond.
Description: The ocean is on the right, with gentle surf. A large, layered, grey rock formation stands in the center with white rocks below it to its left. On the left is the standing, grey trunk of a dead tree. Another dead tree lies touching the water's edge. Atop the rock formation is a lone, green cypress tree; above distant white cliffs are seen a few more cypress trees. A distant hill continues the horizon above the ocean to the right edge of the painting. Two seagulls are silhouetted in white against the ocean just off the point, while several others are silhouetted in white and grey against the sky above. The sky is a cloudy grey, the ocean grey, capturing the atmosphere of a foggy day on the Pacific coast. (From the painting, 18 December 1989.)
Note: The composition is almost identical to that of [Cypress Point, Monterey 2].
Legend: According to William K. Dick, the Brick, Ltd. Gallery offering indicated a date of 1908, but the painting itself is undated.
Identification: The 1969 and 2003 photographs are identical. The 11 June 2003 sale used the alternate title.
