Site: A view from the valley floor, across the Merced river, of the Three Brothers, a rock formation in Yosemite Valley, California.
Description: A large, grey rock formation with a succession of three promontories stands on the left against a blue sky with white clouds. In the distance, on the right horizon, is a ridge of hazy bluish cliffs. In the middle distance, across the river, stands an Indian encampment with three tepees, beyond which is a green forest. On near bank at the left are four tall evergeens standing above some brush and wildflowers. A black snag sticks out from the shore into the water. The entire painting is drawn in coarse brushstrokes. (From a color photograph.)
Note: (1) The 1861 C. E. Watkins photograph of this scene is from a different vantage point.[Naef, Weston J., Era of Exploration, plate 5] (2) As of 1991 the painting was said to be in the collection of The Society of California Pioneers but it could not be located. As of 2018 it has been located in that collection. (3) The painting has lost quite a bit of paint along the bottom edge.
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, as reported in the Inventory of American Paintings. A note on the back of the William K. Dick photograph mentions "Dr. Evans of SCP," presumably referring to Dr. Elliott Evans, who at the time was associated with the Society of California Pioneers.
