Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 30 x 50 in (76 x 127 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F. Schàfer" in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, partly underlined, sloping strongly upward.
Verso: On the lower stretcher bar, "Ev. on the Salmon Riv, Idaho". On the canvas in pencil, the name of the wife of the first owner and "COD/$100.00". There appear to be additional, unintelligible pencil marks on the canvas. On the frame, "175" on at least two sides.
Provenance: private collection, San Francisco, c. 1890, by descent in the family c. 1925, again in 1950, and again in 1987, to private collection, Livermore, California.
Description: A snow-covered mountain, pink from the setting sun, stands in the center above a wide river valley that curves back to the right. On the left side of the river are a snag, a boulder, and a forest in which the two nearest tall conifers are silhouetted against the sky; rising behind the forest is a dark mountain. The right side of the river is also forested; behind the forest is the slope of another mountain. (From a color photograph.)
In index(es): Title list, Indian encampments as incidental subjects, unidentified mountain scenes
