[photo] [The Yosemite Valley 14]
Date: 1897
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 28 x 22 inches (71 x 56 cm)
Inscription: l/r "Frederick Schäfer/1897", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, umlaut missing one dot.
Provenance: In private collection, Pennsylvania, by February 2000.
Site: The classic view looking east into Yosemite Valley, California, from atop the Topinemete bluffs along the old Mariposa trail, with El Capitan on the left, Bridalveil Fall on the right, and Half Dome in the distance.
Description: Four riders in colorful dress are some distance away along a trail through a sunny clearing which leads through a conifer forest to the valley far below. On the steep hillside to the right, two tall conifers frame the picture, reaching well into the sky. In the right foreground is a large rock across which two snags have fallen. In the distance, El Capitan frame s the picture on the left, and the waterfall plunges from a snow-covered valley; patches of snow elsewhere suggest that the season is late October or late May. The Merced river is visible in the valley below, and Half-Dome is silhoueted against fluffy white clouds along the horizon of a blue sky.
