[photo] [Plains Indians in a desert valley]
Medium: oil on canvas backed by a birch board
Size: 32 x 54 in (81 x 112 cm)
Inscription: "F. Schafer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, possible accent over the "a"
Verso: none reported (back covered)
Provenance: Acquired in the 1950s; by descent to private collection, Wichita Falls, Texas by 2005.
Citations: Personal communication, 2005
Site: Not identified, but the "Plains Indians" part of the assigned title seems somewhat implausible. Based on the topography as well as similar paintings by Schafer, it is likely that this painting depicts members of the Modoc tribe in the lava beds of Northern California.
Note: (1) A 1993 appraisal says that the work was in a "Columbia Exhibit", but provided no further information. (2) The peak in the mountain in the middle distance somewhat resembles the stone formation in Indian Head in the Lava Beds. For other similar paintings, see Indians in desert locales.
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title.
