[photo] On the Feather River
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 16 x 24 in (41 x 61 cm)
Inscription: l/l "F.Schafer" in brown, in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand
Verso: l/c "on the Feather R…", remainder covered by the stretcher. A mercantile label of T. J. Bass & Co. is affixed to the upper stretcher bar. bar, in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand.
Provenance: By descent in the family to private collection, Salt Lake City, Utah, by 2010.
Citations: Personal communication with the owner, 2010.
Note: Although the canvas is a standard size (16 x 24 inches) there are several indications that suggest that the original canvas was a larger size and cut down after the painting was finished. The verso inscription continues under the right stretcher bar, and two of the corners of the stretcher bars are square while the other two are mitered. Looking at the front of the painting, the picture seems to stop abruptly on the left side, as if that edge has been trimmed.
Legend: The painting is said to have been in the family's possession in Chicago and then Salt Lake City since the 1880s. If this legend is true, then it is likely that this painting was one that appeared in Schafer's 1888 Chicago exhibition of 157 paintings, as reported in (Chicago) The Sunday Inter Ocean, June 3 and 10, 1888.
Identification: Title from verso inscription.
In index(es): Title list, pastoral and rural scenes
