| Attribution: | Despite being signed in a hand often found on Schafer's oil sketches, this painting is unusual in its rough drafting and lack of finish. Based on appearance alone one would be unlikely to suggest it was painted by Schafer. It is also surprising that the stretcher bars bear the stamp of a Boston art shop. A conservative position would thus be to exclude the painting. On the other hand, the overall composition and attention to illumination do suggest that Schafer might be the artist and the unusual features might be because it is just a sketch. The attribution of this painting thus remains an open question. |
