Inscription: Signed l/l "FSchafer" in the artist's characteristic block-printing hand, initials conjoined in a monogram.
Verso: Titled l/r "Castle Rock on the Columbia Riv / W.T." in the artist's characteristic block-printing hand. (The inscription may continue under the right stretcher bar. See image)
Provenance: By 1999 in collection of Edan Milton Hughes (1935–2015), inventory #1374; to his estate on his passing 21 April 2015; sold 14 June 2020 for $2,000 + 28% by Clar's Auction Gallery, Oakland, California, as lot 7135 in "Art, Furniture, Jewelry, Asian" Auction.

Site: Looking South across the Columbia River, from Washington into Oregon, toward Beacon Rock. The geographic feature in the painting was named "Beacon Rock" by Lewis and Clark in 1805, but it was known as "Castle Rock" from 1811 until 1916, when the United States Board of Geographic Names restored the "Beacon Rock" name.
