Site: Unconfirmed, but apparently a few miles south of Salt Lake City. Based on the painting titles and other legends handed down with the paintings, the lake is called Bear Lake, the large central mountain is called Black Mountain, and the light-colored mountain on the left is called Crystal Mountain. But a search of Utah place names does not turn up any single location associated with all three names.
Description: A black mountain is in the background, with a bright quartz mountain on the left, and a lake covers the left foreground. We look across the lake at an Indian encampment in a clearing on the right bank. There are two tepees, each with campfires from which arise plumes of smoke. Two figures on horseback head toward the camp along the right bank, and a woman with a red robe and a child on foot follow the horses. Other figures sit around the tepees. Trees fill out the right middle distance. (From a color photograph.)
Note: See the list of Wasatch Mountains, including Black Mountain, paintings for other paintings of this same scene from slightly different vantage points.
Identification: Assigned title, based on three other paintings of essentially the same scene that were titled by the artist. The alternate title is of unknown origin, one of several variations, from the 1974 sale catalog. The Inventory of American Paintings entry cites the Sotheby Los Angeles sale. The Inventory has spelled Wasatch as Waustach; the listing of the sale in Auction Prices of American Artists has it as Wausatch. The Early California and Western Art Research index gives the title as Indians camped in Wasatch Mts., Utah, size 30 x 49 in, and identifies the slide with the offering at the Wortsman Stewart Gallery. (The two photographs are of the same painting.)
Other title(s): [Indian encampment in the Wasatch Mountains, Utah]
