Provenance: In collection of Oscar Lemer, D.D.S., and Trudy Lemer, San Francisco, by 1976; by gift to The Monterey Museum of Art in 1976 (public), inventory #76.26.
Reproductions: Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #67 (color, 1983); William K. Dick photo #81 (color, 1972)
Citations: Monterey Peninsula Museum file
Description: A dramatic moonlight scene with the moon bright yellow at the center, partly obscured by grey clouds. The surf washes against rocks and a cliff on the right; the cliff extends to the center of the painting and is topped by several cypress trees. A two-masted steamship at the left on the horizon trails smoke to the right. Airborne white gulls contrast with the dark background. The overall composition is virtually identical to that of North Heads on the Pacific Coast, California. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: The museum accession record identifies the collection of Oscar Lemer, D.D.S., and Trudy Lemer as the donor. The verso inscription was reported by Susan Else, the registrar of paintings of the Monterey Peninsula Museum. The Early California and Western Art Research index identifies the slide with that Museum. A note on the back of the photo by William K. Dick (which gives the title as Moonlight of Monterey Coast) identifies the collection of Oscar Lemer, D.D.S., and Trudy Lemer as the owner.
In index(es): Title list, coastal and marine scenes, moonlight nocturnes and other scenes showing the moon, paintings currently held in museums and public collections
