| Site: | Probably Mount Shasta, California, viewed from the South, though the wide spacing of the secondary cone and the wide flat top may indicate that this is actually a view of Old Baldy (Mount San Antonio) near Los Angeles. |
| Description: | Two Indians on horseback, walking away from the viewer, pass by a bright green clearing between two boulders along a trail at the left side of a stream that flows from the lower center to the right front through a small valley with a pair of snow-covered peaks in the background. In the foreground center is a shadowed boulder, to the left stands a dead tree reaching into the sky, and at its base are boulders with another tree fallen across them. Two prominent trees stand on the hillside above the Indians. The distant banks of the valley are forested. The entire painting is very roughly sketched; the sky is a cloudless blue-white, and the trees of the forests are done with a simple vertical stroke apiece. The only detail is in the ridges and valleys of the double-peaked mountain, suggesting that the primary purpose of the sketch may have been to capture the proportion and detail of the peaks. Apart from a little blue in the sky and the river, the picture is almost entirely done in shades of brown and green. (From the painting, 17 December 1989.) |
