[photo] [Rocky Mountains 1]

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 9.13 x 15 in (23.2 x 38.1 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F. Schafer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand
Provenance: Sold 18 June 1979 for $350+10% by Sotheby's, Los Angeles, as lot 182 in sale 254.
Reproductions: Sotheby's 18 June 1979 sale catalog (monochrome).
Description: Brushwork very noticeable with minimal finish. A snow-capped mountain dominates the center, viewed through a wide river valley. The river enters the scene at the center and continues to the front left; almost no curve is visible until the river sweeps past the viewer's feet to exit on the right. On the near, right bank are a boulder and a log leaning up the bank toward the right. Farther up the bank, a few trees; behind these and higher, a rock cliff. On the left bank, farther away, a steep, forested, hillside. (From a monochrome photograph.)
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the 1979 sale catalog. The small size is distinctive, perhaps a pendant with [Sierra Nevada], at the same sale.
Other title(s): A mountainous landscape (International Auction Records)
In index(es): Title list, unidentified mountain scenes
