Description: Crossing the breaking waves in a deep green body of ater, a small schooner with the number 9 on its sail and a flag atop its mast leans with the wind. The sun brightens the top and side of a rocky head, which rises steeply from the water on the left; beyond it is an isolated rock and then a lower shore line. A white two-masted sailboat appears on the horizon, while a flock of gulls is silhouetted in white against the coastline, and in grey against fluffy clouds which fill the center against a grey sky. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the 1967 Alta California offering. The Inventory of American Paintings entry identifies the 1967 collector as the informant, and Walter Nelson-Rees identifies the WIM Fine Arts photograph with both that collector and the Alta California painting.
In index(es): Title list, coastal and marine scenes, dated paintings
