Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 20 x 36 in (51 x 91 cm)
Inscription: said to be signed l/l
Provenance: In collection of Oscar Lemer, D.D.S., and Trudy Lemer, San Francisco, by 1983
Reproductions: Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #63 (color, 1983); William K. Dick photo #59 (color, 1971)
Site: Nan Jones strongly suggests that it is not the San Joaquin Valley.
Description: Looking down along a path across a dark green rise into a bright green, flat-bottomed river valley with a dramatic blue-grey rise on the other side. The sky is cloud-filled with a little blue offering. Several green trees stand to the left, a few brown trees lower on the right. The river is light blue with white banks on both sides. On the far side of the valley rise three plumes of smoke from unseen campfires. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the Lemer collection as reported by William K. Dick. The Inventory of American Paintings lists a painting with the same title, owned by Burnham in 1980.
