| Description: | Three Indians on horseback follow a trail away from the viewer along the left side of a river valley through which we see a snow-capped Mount Shasta. The sky is a slightly hazy blue; the shadows on the mountaintop indicate that it is morning. Haze obscures the intermediate ranges of mountains that lie below the peaks. The greenish-blue river enters near the lower center and flows to the right front over rapids and rocks. The far bank is a steep slope mostly in greys and browns, with sparse conifers; higher up the slope is a grey, rocky promontory and a smaller promontory above the horizon near the right edge of the painting. The bank on the left side is brightened by several white boulders in the foreground among which lies forest debris and, farther to the left, fallen tree branches. Farther up to the left the slope becomes forested; a tight group of three foreground trees are tall enough to reach the sky above the ridge line. (From the painting, 17 December 1989.) |
