| Site: | Probably a composite. The mountain profile is almost certainly Mount Hood, but the rock formation on the right closely resembles Castle Crags on the upper Sacramento River near Mount Shasta. Unfortunately, the river is on the wrong side of the rock formation. (Topography observations thanks to Arnold Wallen.) |
| Description: | Two riders follow a trail away from the viewer, on the left bank of a river valley. Beyond the river on the right are a few trees, then a range of mountains topped with a high cliff at the right, and finally a snow-capped mountain. On the left are a few tall trees, including one dead tree standing at the left edge, then a range of mountains climbing high to the left. The sky is cloudy, on the left side, hazy on the right. The colors are mostly subdued greens, browns, and blues. (From a color photograph.) |
| Note: | The composition is essentially identical to [Mount Hood from The Dalles, Oregon 2], though on a much smaller canvas. This painting and [Riders approaching Mount Shasta (?)] are so similar that it appears that one is a copy of the other, but it is not clear which might be the original. |
