Photo credit: Bruce Davies, Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 20 x 36 in (51 x 91 cm)

Provenance: In collection of Ada A. O'Halloran, Victoria, B.C., by 1974; by gift to The Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society, 1974.
Exhibited: The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, February 1994 to April 1994. Currently on permanent public display in the castle, in the dining room, East wall.
Citations: Craigdarroch Castle accession file 983.796.
Description: A finely detailed scene of a river flowing gently past a background of rounded hills. On the right bank are several large brown-leaved oak trees standing above two boulders across which a snag has fallen. On the more distant left bank are more broadleaf trees in fall color, some taller green (cottonwood?) trees stand behind, silhouetted against the sky. The river reflects the color, but not the detail, of the forest on the left bank. (From the painting, 11 September 1998)
Note: A painting with the reported title "Autumn in the Adirondocks" was sold as lot #40 in an auction in Victoria in July 1885. It is possible that these two paintings are one and the same, but documentary evidence that can establish the equivalence has not been located.
Identification: Title from the artist's verso inscription, non-standard spelling preserved.
In index(es): Title list, eastern United States scenes, paintings currently held in museums and public collections
