Date: 1887
Medium: oil on canvas, lined
Size: 50 x 30 in (126 x 75 cm)
Inscription: l/l "F. Schàfer 1887", accent probably intended to be an umlaut
Verso: none visible, back covered
Provenance: In collection of Mrs. S. Charpentier, British Columbia, by 1985; by gift to The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
Citations: The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria accession #1985-0812, changed to #92-8 after conservation.
Site: Colquitz creek is a tributary to the Gorge in what is now a settled residential area of Victoria, B.C.
Description: A fisherman in the middle distance, barely large enough to notice, stands on a boulder at the right side of a small stream, pole pointed down toward the water. The stream flows directly toward the viewer, past several downed snags that cross the stream or lean out over it. Also on both sides are large boulders; the nearby left bank is dotted with wildflowers. Tall conifers line both banks of the stream; on the left side two of the trees extend beyond the top of the painting. The sky, occupying only a small section near the upper center of the painting, is a hazy whitish blue. (From the painting, 10 September 1998)
Identification: Title of unknown origin, presumed to have come from a verso inscription, now covered.
In index(es): Title list, fishing scenes, miscellaneous other well-known landmarks, mountain streams through a forest, Pacific northwest coast and Victoria, British Columbia, paintings currently held in museums and public collections, dated paintings
