[photo] [Indian Encampment 3]
Photo credit: Courtesy of Pope County Historical Society, 2022
Medium: oil on canvas, appears to be lined
Size: 30 x 60 in (76 x 152 cm)
Inscription: l/l "F. Schafer, in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, with a single dot over the "a".
Verso: "1946-2" in pencil on both the upper and lower frame outer molding. "1260 / ea / Johnson", in very light pencil near the center of the upper frame molding. "872" in broad brush or magic marker on the lower frame molding (perhaps a dealer inventory number). The same brush or marker obliterates a region of the lower frame edge, perhaps to hide the name of a previous owner. (See note 1.)
Provenance: Probably acquired ca 1950 while living in Portland by collection of Cleora C. Helbing (1892–1966); by descent to collection of Geneva Helbing (1889–1969); donated to Pope County Historical Society, Glenwood, Minnesota, October 1968, accession #2008.3278.
Citations: Personal communications with the museum staff, 2007 and 2022
Site: Unidentified, possibly Eastern Oregon. The locale appears to be the same as in the near mirror image painting [Indian Encampment 4].
Note: 1. The meanings of the verso frame inscriptions have not been determined. 2. The pictographs on the nearest tepee might help identify the tribe and thus the locale, though this idea assumes that the artist accurately reproduced them.
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title.
Other title(s): [Indian encampment on the Great Plains] (previous assigned, descriptive title)
In index(es): Title list, Indian encampments as primary subjects, Indians in desert locales, paintings currently held in museums and public collections
