Provenance: collection of Mary Beth and Mellon C. Baird, Austin, Texas, by 2002; bequeathed to The Monterey Museum of Art, Monterey, California, 2002; deacquisitioned 22 April 2007 in a benefit auction as lot 46, realizing $4400.
Reproductions: 22 April 2007 benefit auction catalog.
Site: The U.S. Geographic Names database reports nine lakes in California (and 343 in the United States) named "Clear Lake". A reasonable guess is that the Clear Lake of this painting is the one located just south of the Mendocino National Forest, about 100 miles north of San Francisco. Another reasonable guess, given that the trees are broadleaf, is that it is the Clear Lake located in the Adirondacks.
Note: Paintings with this title have appeared in at least two 19th century auction catalogs but without enough information to either include or exclude the possibility that one of them is this painting. See Paintings known only by title for details.
Identification: Title from verso inscription.
In index(es): Title list, forest path scenes
