Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 20 x 36 inches (51 x 91 cm)
Inscription: unsigned
Verso: l/c "The North heads / Pacific Coast." in the artist's distinctive block-lettering hand. A label affixed to the frame reads "Marine 3415 / Davie Art Shop / 851 DAVIE STREET".
Provenance: In the family of the present owner since at least the 1920s; by descent to private collection, Vancouver Island, B.C. by 2008.
Citations: Personal communication with the owner, July 2008.
Attribution: The painting is unsigned, so attribution must be made by other characteristics. There are four other paintings by Frederick Schafer of this same scene. All have the same general composition, the same palette, and many of the same details in the same positions, for example the broken mast on the shore, a ship in the distance, and sea gulls in the air. In addition, the verso inscription is in the distinctive lettering hand of Schafer.
Site: The North side of the Golden Gate, near San Francisco, California.
Note: A sticker of the Davie Art Shop is affixed to the back of the frame. That shop was at the address on the sticker from 1949 to 1979, suggesting that the reframing was done around 1949.
Legend: Said to have been purchased by the collector's grandfather at a church bazaar in Victoria, B.C. and reframed by the collector's mother when she acquired it in the 1940s.
Identification: Title from the verso inscription.
In index(es): Title list, coastal and marine scenes, paintings probably attributable to Schafer
