[photo] [Mount Hood from the Columbia River at Cape Horn] (attributed)

Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 16 x 24 in (41 x 61 cm)
Inscription: unsigned
Verso: said to be "Columbia River?" "Mt. Hood Cape Horn" written in a modern hand
Provenance: In The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley, California, ca 1969.
Reproductions: The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley on-line catalog
Citations: The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley inventory # 1969.007
Attribution: Being unsigned, attribution of this painting must always be in question, answered primarily by its appearance. It has an overall composition and style that are typical of Frederick F. Schafer, with a detailed foreground including litter, botanically accurate trees, and a river that is not mirror-like. The middle distance is somewhat less detailed and the more distant planes and sky are filled in with a much less-finished style. The palette is also typical of Schafer. Thus it seems likely that the attribution is correct.
Site: Although lack of an artist-supplied title makes identification problematic, the large rock mass at the left somewhat resembles Cape Horn on the Columbia River, and the background mountain has the profile of Mount Hood.
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title based on the site description above.
In index(es): Title list, Columbia River scenes, Mount Hood, paintings currently held in museums and public collections, paintings probably attributable to Schafer
