Description: "The effect of a sunset on Mount Shasta speaks more plainly than all the rest the great ability of the artist." (From the San Francisco Evening Bulletin report preceding a San Francisco auction sale.) "...which has already been commented on by the press as nothing short of mastery in lights and shades and general execution." (From the Los Angeles Times report of a Los Angeles auction.)
Identification: The painting at the 1884 exhibition and the 1884 auction are probably the same. The painting exhibited in 1882 and the one mentioned in the 1886 Los Angeles reference could be different paintings that have the same title.
