Many of Schafer's paintings are of scenes that include water. One frequent form of these paintings is a stream or creek tumbling down mountainside rapids directly toward the viewer, with forest on both sides. The vertical-orientation paintings in this category bear a close kinship with the similarly-composed forest path paintings. Although some of these paintings bear names of specific locales, there is little to distinguish one from the next. For other paintings depicting water see also the indexes of paintings of coastal and marine scenes and lakeshore scenes.
