No evidence has emerged that Schafer ever actually visited the tropics. These scenes seem to be part of a repertoire of such scenes painted by several nineteenth-century San Francisco artists, apparently to satisfy a market of buyers who came to San Francisco by a way of a Central American overland crossing.
