This log is used for several purposes, all related to site improvement: to see how often and how intensely the site is used, to help identify bad links and other site construction errors, and to compare search terms (which appear in the URL of the referring page) with the pages eventually retrieved as a result of the search, with an eye to improving the effectiveness of searches.

The usage log is normally reviewed every few weeks, and then discarded.
