The first eight of these paintings depict variations on the same scene. In each of these eight, a dark mountain is viewed across a small body of water with a much brighter mountain on the left, on which is seen the geologic feature known as the Devil's Slide. The Devil's Slide is located along the Weber River in the Weber Canyon of the Wasatch range, about 30 miles east of Ogden, Utah. The remaining paintings in this index are elsewhere in the Wasatch range. Since Schafer apparently did extensive painting in the area, it seems likely that some of his other paintings with unidentified locales are also of the Wasatch Mountains.
