Although the bulk of Schafer's work consists of scenes in the United States, a modest number of works depict other places. Some of the European scenes may have been painted before his immigration to the United States, but apart from one watercolor that is titled in German, there is no supporting evidence. The two still-lifes appear in this group on the (admittedly flimsy) basis that they may have been an academic exercise, painted while Schafer was in training.
