Site: | View East into Yosemite Valley, California, from atop the Topinemete bluffs along the old Mariposa trail, probably at Inspiration point, with Cathedral Rocks and Bridalveil Fall on the right, and Sentinel Rock and Half Dome in the distance. |
Description: | The dark brown Cathedral Rocks and the hanging valley with Bridalveil Fall on the right dominate, with a canyon landscape in the distance on left. Bright blue and white sky, grey and blue background and bright spots near the right, foam on the river and a white rock contrast with the dark cliffs. A tall dead tree stands amid the forest in the center; another dead tree lies across a path. Figures sit in a green clearing on the ground near the path. (From a color photograph.) |
Identification: | Both the Early California and Western Art Research index and the 17 February 1988 sale use the title Indian encampment, Bridal Veil Falls. The photo from William K. Dick appears to be of the same painting, before major restoration. |
