Description: | Near the center, two cows, one brown and one white, stand on the dark lower bank of a slough or river, which reflects the bright, cloudy, sky above. Beyond, on the brighter upper bank is the rest of the herd, and beyond that through a gap in the trees is seen is a bright yellow-green field and a low, bluish range of hills. Apart from the gap, dark green broadleaf trees form the horizon; toward the right is a nearer, much taller grove. A white tree trunk stands, leaning, just to the right of these taller trees. A rail fence separates the grove from a foreground grassy clearing. Two rocks or snags are seen in the water near the right edge. The sky at the right is dark blue. (From a color photograph.) |
Identification: | Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the museum listing. The museum registrar, in describing the painting from the slide, placed the grove on the left, suggesting that either that slide or the duplicate slide may have been reversed. The The San Franciscan, on January 30, 1886, reported that Schafer was "engaged upon a scene on the Carmel River, near Monterey" which could possibly be this painting. |
