Description: | A "man of the mountain" rock formation is silhouetted in the upper right corner against a brilliant orange sunset sky with a dark conifer forest in the valley below and a river in the foreground. The river appears to be flowing away from the viewer's feet, implying, for the Truckee River, that the view is to the North. The sun comes from off the canvas to the left, bathing Roscoe and the forest below Roscoe's face in orange. A very bright orange cloud appears in the center of a blue sky; a few fluffy clouds surround it. The center of the painting is very dark. (From a color photograph.) |
Identification: | Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the 1986 sale catalog. The Early California and Western Art Research index identifies the slide with the 22 May 1986 Butterfield & Butterfield sale. |
