Site: | View of Bridalveil Fall and the Merced river, Yosemite, from the valley floor. |
Description: | A field sketch in oil. Bridalveil Fall thunders down over a greyish cliff into a cloud of mist. Cathedral Rocks loom above the falls and off the top of the painting. The Merced River covers much of the visible valley floor, as well as the entire front edge of the painting. A long, narrow, island in the middle of the river extends across most of the foreground. A half-dozen conifers stand on the right against a blurred forest; there are several more indistinct conifers near the middle, just to the left of the waterfall; on the left bank are two or three more hastily sketched conifers, with El Capitan rising steeply, and somewhat fuzzily, behind. The sky is whitish blue with fluffy white clouds. Some distance down the valley on the right side is a rock formation, probably Sentinel Rock. (From the painting, 12/21/96) |
Note: | The small size suggests that this may be an on-site sketch. When the painting was cleaned in 1997, dirt was found under the varnish, in some cases deeply embedded in the paint, supporting the conjecture that it was painted on-site. |
