Description: | Two crossed palm trees dominate the center of the scene, standing above a tangle of tropical brush on the right bank of a river. In the foreground, brownish dirt surrounds an area of grey sand strewn with small rocks; a flowering bush stands at the left edge. The riverbank continues to be covered with tropical foliage into the hazy distance under a grey, cloudy sky. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | 1. This painting is one of several tropical scenes by Schafer, which may have been prepared to satisfy a demand for such paintings from San Francisco residents who came from the east via a Central American overland route. 2. In fall, 1999, an image of this painting was posted on the World-Wide Web site that displays the collection of Edan Milton Hughes (1935–2015). It was simultaneously offered for sale by california-art.com using the Hughes inventory number. |
