| Note: | (1) Although Schafer was familiar with tropical scenery from his presumed travel from New York to San Francisco by way of Panama, there is no evidence that he ever visited Brazil or the Amazon River. This painting may be a composite based on a California river plus his sketches of Central American locales. (2) Although none of the sale catalogs describe the painting as lined, the clean, white appearance of the back, the neatly trimmed edges and folded corners at the edge of the stretcher bars, and what appear to be edges of the original canvas in the verso photograph suggest that it has been lined. If so, the verso inscription may have been transcribed from an the original canvas at the time of lining. (3) Morning on the Amazon River, South America seems to be a morning version, perhaps intended as a pendant. |
| Identification: | Title from the verso inscription with spelling of "Amazone" corrected and abbreviations expanded. The photographs from each of the sales match. |
