Medium: oil on canvas (lined? See note.)
Size: 30 x 20 in (76 x 51 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F Schafer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, initials conjoined in a monogram
Verso: l/c "Ev. on the Amazone Riv / Sth. America" printed in block lettering but not in the artist's hand, some letter strokes strangely omitted.
Provenance: In private collection, New Jersey; sold 11 April 2005 for $4113 by Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco, as lot 92 in sale 13084, "California and American Paintings and Sculpture". Offered in January 2006 by Spanierman Gallery LLC, New York City. Sold 9 November 2006 for $4183 by Heritage Auctions, Inc., Dallas, Texas as lot 25106 in "Fine Art Signature Auction" #638.
Reproductions: Bonhams & Butterfields sale catalog (color); Heritage Auctions, Inc. sale catalog (color).
Note: (1) There is no evidence that Schafer ever actually visited Brazil. This painting is probably a composite based on a local river and photographs or sketches of South American locales, perhaps a painting done for a commission. (2) Although none of the sale catalogs describe the painting as lined, the clean, white appearance of the back, the neatly trimmed edges and folded corners at the edge of the stretcher bars, and what appear to be edges of the original canvas in the verso photograph suggest that it has been lined. If so, the verso inscription may have been transcribed from an the original canvas at the time of lining.
Identification: Title from the verso inscription. The photographs from each of the sales match.
In index(es): Title list, sunset scenes, tropical scenes
