Frederick Ferdinand Schafer Painting Catalog

Problematic painting record FFSp0654

[photo] [Mount Shasta]
Photo credit: William K. Dick, 1971
Medium: oil on canvas, lined
Size: 24 x 36 in (61 x 91 cm)
Inscription: l/l "Schafer" scratched in surface, not in the artist's hand
Provenance: In private collection, Felton, California, by 1967. Gift to The Museum of Ancient and Modern Art, Penn Valley California, "several years" before 2001; with eBay, 2 December--12 December 2001; and again several times between January and August 2002.
Reproductions: William K. Dick photo #160 (color, June 1971)
Citations: 29 July 1967 note in the Alameda Free Library Clipping File. eBay item #1492743472 (December 2001) and #1403771270 (January 2002) and #1522177821 and #852515077 (March 2002).
Attribution: needs review.
Site: A tall snow-covered stratovolcano, but not Mount Shasta.
Description: The stratovolcano stands in the center, surrounded by dark grey cliffs and a brown promontory to the left, green forest at the right with a prominent brown dead tree near the center that has only a few branches. The foreground consists of a small boulder-strewn gully with wildflowers. (From a color photograph.)
Note: The 1967 note in the Alameda Free Library Clipping File reports that the painting was inscribed verso "Schafer" and does not mention any recto inscription. When the painting was examined by William K. Dick in 1971, it had been lined and there was a scratched recto inscription, which may have been added in the process of lining. A note on the back of the photograph gives the size as 22 x 36 inches, probably a transcription error, since the 1967 and 2001 reports agree on a size of 24 x 36 inches.
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, as reported by the note in the Alameda Free Library Clipping File
In index(es): questioned attributions
