Site: | A tall snow-covered stratovolcano, but not Mount Shasta. |
Description: | The stratovolcano stands in the center, surrounded by dark grey cliffs and a brown promontory to the left, green forest at the right with a prominent brown dead tree near the center that has only a few branches. The foreground consists of a small boulder-strewn gully with wildflowers. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | The 1967 note in the Alameda Free Library Clipping File reports that the painting was inscribed verso "Schafer" and does not mention any recto inscription. When the painting was examined by William K. Dick in 1971, it had been lined and there was a scratched recto inscription, which may have been added in the process of lining. A note on the back of the photograph gives the size as 22 x 36 inches, probably a transcription error, since the 1967 and 2001 reports agree on a size of 24 x 36 inches. |
Identification: | Descriptive title of unknown origin, as reported by the note in the Alameda Free Library Clipping File |
