Description: | A European forest scene with broadleaf trees rising behind a bright timber-frame cottage with a sod roof on the right; smoke rises from the chimney. In the center, a break in the woods leads the eye off to the horizon. A path leads from the cottage toward the viewer across a slightly gold field; a woman and a boy stand on the path at the edge of a bluish foreground shadow. On the left, a stream enters the picture, then leaves. Wildflowers dot the rolling terrain. Farm animals can be seen in the distance on the left. (From a color photograph.) |
Note: | The Europen style half-timbered structure with sod roof suggests that this scene may have been painted in Germany before Schafer emigrated to the United States. |
Identification: | Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the 1985 sale catalog. The Butterfield & Butterfield sale gives the provenance as the Oakland Museum; the Inventory of American Paintings entry cites the Oakland Museum as the owner. The Early California and Western Art Research index identifies the slide with the 25 April 1985 sale. |
