Description: | A snow-covered stratovolcano stands majestically--almost magically--in the center under a cloudless blue sky, with the sun from the right casting shadows on the volcano's left-facing slopes. The view is through a steep river valley and across several low-lying purplish-gray ridges. In the foreground a mountain slope on the right forms a triangle of more finished detail with a conifer grove near the back, two trees standing tall above the others and silhouetted agains the sky, a reddish cliff at the right edge, and a boulder-strewn grassy area with wildflowers near the front; a snag lies across one of the boulders pointing out toward a white-water river below. On the other side of the river is a less-detailed steep rocky slope. (From a color photograph.) |
Legend: | 1. Reported to have been a gift from the Schalea family to the Tacoma Presbyterian Church, before World War I. When the church was to be demolished, the minister gave it to a long-time employee. 2. Sale price in 1993 rumored to have been $60,000. |
