Description: | A fisherman wearing a dark hat, white shirt, and dark vest stands with his pole on his shoulder beside a large boulder on the right bank of a stream, which rushes away from the viewer over a white rapid. Tall conifers stand silhouetted against the sky on each side of the boulder; the hillside on the right is covered with grass, brush, and rocks, with a cliff in the upper background whose profile shows a peaked promontory. In the distance at the center the lower reaches of the stream are visible; beyond that lies a blue-grey mountain ridge. A log with a short, vertical, side branch bridges the stream and many fallen, leafless branches lie at the edge and among the brush; a snag stands part way up the slope on the right. The sky is white with bright clouds, with a bit more gray at the right. The colors in the foreground are mostly greens and browns; the background is blues, grays, and whites. Legend: | There is an unconfirmed report that the Piedmont collector acquired the painting at a White Elephant sale conducted by the Women's Board of The Oakland Museum of California in the late 1970s. |
