Frederick Ferdinand Schafer Painting CatalogUnidentified painting record FFSu1140 |
Date: | not reported |
Size: | not reported |
Provenance: | Probably acquired by Milo A. and Henrietta E. Smith, perhaps directly from the artist upon his visit to Denver in 1888 (see Note 1); if not then by Alfred B. and Grace D. Bell, the next generation, after 1897; by descent in the family in 1921, 1922, 1962, 1980, 1985, and 2020; to private collection, Denver, Colorado; since destroyed (see Note 2). |
Citations: | Personal communications with descendants, 2021 and 2023 |
Note: | 1. This is one of six paintings belonging to the same family, the other five of which all have a verso price inscription written in the same hand and all are about the same size, suggesting that they may have all been acquired at the same sale, possibly the 1888 sale held by Schafer when he stopped in Denver on his way home from an exhibition of American art at the Art Insitute of Chicago. 2. The painting is reported to have been so badly damaged that it was destroyed. |
