There are several paintings with almost identical composition: vertical orientation, a path leading directly toward the observer with forest on each side, and (usually) figures walking along the path. Another group of very similar paintings, but with the path replaced by a stream--and sometimes a fisherman--is mountain streams through a forest. Some of these paintings are set in the Eastern forest, as indicated either by their titles or the broadleaf trees, while others are set in the Western forest.
