A popular Schafer subject is a stream or creek tumbling down mountainside rapids directly toward the viewer, with forest on both sides. The vertical-orientation paintings in this category bear a close kinship with the similarly-composed forest path paintings. Although some of these paintings bear names of specific locales, there is little to distinguish one from the next.
