[photo] [Along the Russian River]
Photo credit: Maxwell Galleries, Ltd., San Francisco
Medium: oil on canvas
Size: 22 x 36 in (56 x 91 cm)
Inscription: l/r "F. Schafer", in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, underlined
Provenance: With Maxwell Galleries, Ltd., San Francisco, in 1987.
Reproductions: Early California and Western Art Research/Schafer slide #83 (color, 1987).
Site: The Russian River is about 50 miles North of San Francisco, California.
Description: View of a river valley with the river at the left, forest filling a slope up to the right, and a small patch of blue-grey sky in the upper left. A figure wearing a white brimmed hat stands in the water pulling on a pole, while a second figure on the bank, wearing a red shirt, watches. In the middle distance four cows stand on the riverbank. There is a lot of forest clutter--snags in the foreground and lying on right bank, other dead trees standing above the cows and on the right bank; bright yellow brush. There is a marked contrast between the very bright center and the distant, dark green forests. (From a color photograph.)
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, as used by the Maxwell Galleries, Ltd.. A label on the Maxwell Galleries, Ltd. photograph gives the size as 24 x 36, but the proportions of the image in that photograph are those of 22 x 36.
