[photo] [Indian encampment below majestic peaks]

Medium: oil on canvas, lined
Size: 19 x 36 in (48 x 91 cm)
Inscription: said to be signed l/l (not visible in photograph)
Provenance: Offered 14 March 1985 by Butterfield & Butterfield, San Francisco, as lot 4222 in sale 3522P (not sold). Sold in 1999 by california-art.com, Santa Margarita, California, to private collection, Atlanta, Georgia.
Reproductions: Butterfield & Butterfield 14 March 1985 sale catalog.
Site: Not identified, but the rock formations bear a strong resemblence to Castle Crags, so the mountain in the distance could be Mount Shasta.
Description: In the distance, on the left through a glacial valley, stands a snow-covered mountain peak below a blue sky with a few clouds. Above the valley to the right are steep cliffs rising to pinnacles. In the center left is a lake or river, with two groups of tepees beyond. Wisps of smoke climb from campfires in each group. On the near bank stand two white boulders, low brush and flowers, and two logs cross from the lower right corner toward the center of the painting; several other downed snags litter the sides. (From a color photograph.)
Note: The site may be the same as that of [Mount Shasta landscape near Castle Lake 1].
Identification: Descriptive title of unknown origin, from the 1985 sale catalog.
