Site: Looking East through the Golden Gate into San Francisco Bay with Fort Point in the distance on the right.
Description: A dramatic moonlit scene with dark water in the foreground, bright water at the horizon, and a sky of varied brightness almost filled with heavy clouds, partly obscuring the yellow moon in the center. Black rocky cliffs stand on the right, with waves lapping against the rocks below. A three-masted ship rounds Fort Point with a tugboat immediately behind and several sailboats beyond. The mast of a wrecked schooner lies broken across the rocks to the right and a white bird flies silhouetted against the dark cliff. Small details, such as lights visible through the portholes of the three-master, abound. (From the painting, 19 July 1990.)
Identification: The Early California and Western Art Research index identifies the painting as Moonlight on the Golden Gate, and some of the brochures and exhibition listings omit the words San Francisco from the title.
In index(es): Title list, coastal and marine scenes, moonlight nocturnes and other scenes showing the moon
