Site: A view of Mount Shasta at sunset from the south, probably near the town of Dunsmuir. Shastina is on the left.
Description: Three riders on a trail on the left side of a river valley look across at two tepees and a campfire on the right side. The peaks are snow-capped, bathed in the orange glow of sunset, against a sky that, in the photograph, has a greenish cast. The setting sun catches a brownish-red crag at the upper left, a brownish hill near the right center, and the tops of the trees on the right. The three riders wear hats; the one in the center has a blue pack at the back of the saddle. There are several snags, both standing and fallen on the hillside at the left as well as on the bank on the right.; A curved trunk on the ground near the front is especially prominent. (From the painting, 9 December 1989)
Note: The initials "S.F." following the signature suggest that the painting was executed during the period 1880-1886, when Schafer had a studio in San Francisco.
Identification: Assigned, descriptive title.
