Site: Nominally a view south across the Straits of Juan de Fuca from across an inlet near Victoria, British Columbia, although the mountains are about three times as large as they should be from that distance.
Description: A view across a river or sound, with low mountains on either side and a snow-capped mountain range in the background against a cloudless blue sky. On the far, right side of the river is an Indian encampment with six white tents and many figures. At the river's edge, six black, long-prowed canoes, each occupied by several figures, are setting out toward the left. On the left side of the river in the foreground, a small grove of conifers stands behind low brush and three small boulders. A snag extends out over the water. Wildflowers cover the ground immediately in front of the viewer. (From a color photograph.)
Note: This painting is one of a series of Pacific northwest coast and Victoria, British Columbia, all of which depict the same tents and ocean-going dugout canoes.
