[photo] [Pines on a Hillside]

Medium: watercolor on paper
Size: 12 x 9 inches (30 x 23 cm)
Inscription: Signed l/l: "F. Schafer" in brown in the artist's characteristic block-letter hand, underlined. There is said to be a second inscription "July 1935" under the signature in pencil, but it is apparently covered by the frame; the top half of a what may be a script "J" is visible in the photograph. Presumably this pencil inscription was added by a later hand, since the artist passed away in 1927.
Provenance: Sold 4 February 2007 for $50 by Michaan's Auctions by the Bay, Inc., Alameda, California as lot 1090. Offered 3 February 2008 (not sold) by Clar's Auction Gallery, Oakland, California as lot 2002 in sale 461. Sold 25 August 2016 for $100+23% by PBA Galleries, San Francisco, California as lot 75 in sale 594.
Reproductions: Michaan's Auctions by the Bay, Inc. sale catalog, Clar's Auction Gallery sale catalog, PBA Galleries sale catalog.
Note: The 2007 Michaan's Auctions by the Bay, Inc. catalog describes the painting as by Frederick Schafer, but the 2008 Clar's Auction Gallery catalog describes it as "attributed to Frederick Ferdinand Schafer", implying uncertainty as to who painted it. There is nothing obvious in the photograph or about the signature that seems to contradict a firm attribution.
Identification: Descriptive title as used in the 3 February 2008 Clar's Auction Gallery sale.
Other title(s): Mountain hillside (2007 sale catalog); California Mountain Scene (2016 sale catalog)
In index(es): Title list, unidentified mountain scenes, watercolor and gouache paintings
