Another Schafer painting, Lookout Rock, Yosemite Valley [1], depicts a different rock formation. 3. Paintings with this title were offered as lot 43 on page 4 of the catalog of a September 1882 auction in San Francisco, as lot 6 in the catalog of a July 1885 auction in Victoria, British Columbia, and as lot 32 on page 4 in the catalog of a 17 November 1885 auction in San Francisco but there is not enough information in those catalogs to either include or exclude the possibility that one of these is this painting. |
| Note: | This is one of five paintings belonging to the same family, all of which have a verso price inscription written in the same hand and all are about the same size, suggesting that they may have all been acquired at the same sale, possibly the 1888 sale held by Schafer when he stopped in Denver on his way home from an exhibition of American art at the Art Insitute of Chicago. |
