| Attribution: | Although the signature closely resembles that of Frederick F. Schafer and the subject matter is plausible for that artist, the style of the painting is quite different. The palette uses bright, almost garish colors throughout, and the use of brown rather than gray shades for the granite mountain is hard to comprehend. The foliage is unnaturally neat and the environment is devoid of anything out of place. The central focus seems to be on the old road rather than on the waterfall. Neither waterfall is particularly graceful. The mountain (and, indeed, the painting as a whole) has little depth and a foreshortened, almost awkward perspective. All of these characteristics argue against attribution to Frederick F. Schafer. |
